Tossed Salad Afghan

Happy New Year All
The holidays are over and the kids have all gone home.
It's so quiet around here.
It's like empty nesting all over again.
I miss the Grand Baby most of all.
Who knows when I'll see her again.
The long winter will linger forever as it does every year.
I must keep myself busy.

In the evenings while the kids were visiting.
When everyone had settled down to watch TV.
I worked on a simple project to keep my hands busy.
When I first started to crochet I bought mostly acrylic yarn from the craft stores.
Natural fiber yarns are a bit costly and since my crocheting wasn't all that perfect back then, I figured acrylic was the way to go. Over time, I've accumulated quite the stockpile of partially used skeins.
I found enough greenish ones to fill a laundry basket.
Using 2 strands throughout and a simple ribbed double crochet, I made this super thick afghan.
It's warm and machine washable.
I plan to do this with the rest of my scraps as well.
I have a basket filled with purples for the next one.
It's a good feeling to use up some of the supplies that I've hoarded over the years.
And...it keeps me busy while I wait for the snow to melt.
I should have quite the stack of afghans by the time that happens.

Keep warm everyone.
It's cold outside!!!

Winding Down

It's snowing outside as I sit inside my cozy home having my morning coffee.
I've already fed the birds who gather each day at the bird feeders outside my kitchen window.
I'm thinking about this past year and all that has happened in my little world.
I'm thankful for my lovely home, my family and friends, and just the fact that I'm still here, looking forward to another year and whatever it may bring.
Wondering if my cup will run over with joy,
 or be empty and sad.
I'm thinking of something a friend once said to me when I was feeling sorry for myself.
He said, "Life is what you make it."
I hope to make this year in my life a good one.

I recently read these words:
"It's better to be kind than to be right."

My goal is to live by these words as best I can.
I've spent too much time trying to be right and not enough time being kind.
Something that I regret every day.

Thank you to anyone out there who has ever taken time to read my blog!
May 2014 be your best year yet.
Wishing you all kindness, happiness and good fortune.

Where has the time gone?

I can't believe Christmas is right around the corner.
I was upstairs wrapping gifts for my family this morning
and looked at all the stuff on my desk
and thought how I hadn't picked up my camera in weeks.
So, I put a fresh battery in my camera
and got some photos of the stuff on and around my desk.
I hope you are all busy with happy holiday tasks
and making good memories.

Owl Hat For Vera

The past couple of weeks have gone by so quickly.
My stepdaughter Anita and grand baby Vera have been here visiting from NC.
They are leaving this afternoon to spend time with another grandma.
It's going to be so quiet around here.
In between the playing and feedings and all the other baby stuff, I managed to make Vera a little owl hat. It's a bit big for her , but she'll grow into it.
Oh dear!!! I'm gonna miss her!
